A new circuit judge has come to town, and the guy who runs everything and everybody in the territory is expecting a milquetoast law book type but gets an hombre that’s as rough and tough as he is. On his way in, the judge witnesses a funeral and discovers the dearly departed was sent to his reward by the town boss’ son, and insists on a trial. Unstoppable force meets immovable land baron.
All the trappings of a cheap color B-western, but the talented cast and crew makes this a definite notch-on-the-gun above. Herb Meadow, who’d later co-create Have Gun, Will Travel, adapted a story by Louis L’Amour; Jacques “Cat People” Tourneur directed; the cast includes tough leading man Joel McCrea as the judge, John McIntire as cruel papa Josiah Bannerman; Kevin McCarthy as the murderous son; and John Carradine as the local “Colonel” who plays all sides. Lest you think it’s an all-male town, though, we have pretty Miroslava as McCarthy’s cousin and Nancy Gates as the witness who can hang Kevin if she lives long enough.
Fast moving and action-packed, with hissable villains and a two-fisted hero that spends little time romancin' and no time singin'... just how we like our B-westerns.
Million-dollar Dialog:
McIntire to his niece, regarding the nervous banker she's being forced to marry: "Amy Lee, I never said you were wrong about this fella. But who else is there to marry around here?"
Nice bonus material, including an 8 min. piece on McCrea and the making of the film, the original trailer, commentary by reliable Toby Roan, and the complete shooting script(!) among other goodies.
If you like B-westerns, grab this.
